New blast furnace in Luleå - At present, we are producing our hot metal in two blast furnaces. Last year, we decided to construct an entirely new blast furnace on the same site as our current large blast furnace. When the project is completed, it will be possible to carry out all the hot metal production in Luleå in only one blast furnace. 2008-03-19 SSAB Tunnplåt’s Luleå operation annually delivers about 2-3 million tons of steel slabs to SSAB Tunnplåt in Borlänge for further processing. Remote control of locomotives enables total control of 300 tons of molten steel in 2000, SSAB invested in a state-of-the-art blast furnace for the Luleå operation. The contents of harmful trap elements are low enough for recycling into the blast furnace.

Use of biocarbon in blast furnace-based steelmaking could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 30 percent in the short to medium term. In a recently started research project under the direction of Swerea MEFOS the methods will be developed and tested at SSAB. Lowering the carbon consumption and fossil CO2 emissions is a priority in blast furnace (BF) ironmaking. Renewable biomass is one option that can play an important role in future low-carbon ironmaking particularly in the countries rich in biomass resources. In this study, full-scale trials to investigate the impact of briquettes containing torrefied sawdust on the BF efficiency and process SSAB and Linde Gas, formerly AGA, have been working together to investigate the possibility of mixing oxygen in the combustion air to the heaters at SSAB’s blast furnace 3 in Luleå, Northern Sweden. Between 2030-2040, the plan is to convert the blast furnaces in Luleå, Sweden and Raahe, Finland to eliminate most of the remaining CO 2 emissions.. The company anticipates that our Iowa operations will be powered by renewable SSAB Luleå. The decission to built the northernmost steel plant in the world was made in 1940. The first integrated plant started to grow in the harbor district of Luleå in Lapland, the works were named "Norrbottens Järnverk AB". By 1953 the blast furnace no.1, Thomas steel plant and a blooming mill were already running on the site. New blast furnace in Luleå - At present, we are producing our hot metal in two blast furnaces. SSAB will cut its CO 2 emissions in Sweden by 25% by as early as 2025, through the conversion of the blast furnaces in Oxelösund, Sweden, to an electric arc furnace. Between 2030-2040, the plan is to convert the blast furnaces in Luleå, Sweden and Raahe, Finland to eliminate most of the remaining CO 2 emissions.. The method is now used at SSAB in Oxelösund. The idea of using blast furnace dust and sludge as a fuel supplement in the blast furnace was conceived as early as the late 1990s. Flue dust is a residual product from iron production, containing fine-grained Hot coke being discharged from the coking plant where coal is converted into metallurgical coke at SSAB’s steel mill in Luleå before transport to the quench tower for cooling. The coke gas and coke are used in the blast-furnace as fuel and the reducing agent. The HYBRIT project ultimately aims to replace all fossil-carbon use in steelmaking SSAB’s recently renovated blast furnace in Luleå is the most climate-efficient one in the world. But it is still one of the main sources of carbon emissions in the country. SSAB’s blast furnaces in Oxelösund and Luleå are Sweden’s largest point sources of carbon emissions; combined they account for 10 percent of total carbon emissions in Sweden.

SSAB’s blast furnace in Luleå, Sweden is now turning out premium quality crude iron after undergoing full modernization lasting more than three months. The blast furnaces in Raahe, Finland were modernized as recently as 2011 and an investment in a pulverized coal injection system has now been completed there. This investment will reduce annual costs by around SEK 200 million from 2016

“The goal is to be first in the world to produce fossil-free steel as early as 2026.”. tonnes of iron per year, i.e., 20% of LKAB's total processing capacity at Malmberget and almost half of the production capacity of SSAB's blast furnace in Luleå.
