2013-09-12 · I used Relevanssi up until the day I had the first alpha version of SearchWP working because it really is great. SearchWP solves a few different problems for me though, specifically in weighting different Custom Fields separately, weight attribution as outlined in the article, and supplemental search engines to name a few. I’ve integrated Relevanssi and live searchWP and I’m now looking to modify the searchform.php to include filtering the results with: Search only in a custom pod field (e.g. Search only in book.table_of_content) Filter by a pod taxonomy (e.g. subject) Ideally these filters would impact the live search and also the results displayed in search.php In this way, Relevanssi is ideal for users who are frustrated with the type of results WordPress search produces. It is not ideal for users who are seeking performance improvements in search.

The overall feature list isn’t as good as SearchWP (which also offers live search), but it has a free version and is just plain cheaper. If you specifically want a free WordPress search plugin, I think Ivory Search is the most generous, with Relevanssi also being a solid option. Ajax Search Lite is also good if you specifically want live search functionality for free.
